Workshop and demonstration at time to be advised during the symposium: Special guest Donna Campbell has been weaving native flax and using traditional natural dyes to colour it for many years to produce traditional Maori garments and items. The fibres extracted from the leaves of New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax, have been used as the principal textile fibre by Maori since pre- European times. Donna uses raureka, a yellow dye produced from bark and roots. The Maori also use uku, a rusty-coloured mud used to obtain a black dye. Traditional Maori dyeing uses wood ash mordant.

Can't attend the workshop? Express interest in a DVD in advance - if we get enough expressions of interest we will consider filming workshops. DVDs will be sold for AUD $50 each.
