Instructions and use of the Heatfix Dye

HEATFIX DYES: Some shade of heatfix dyes can be used to get good dye effects on cellulose - and these are some effective methods that will ensure successful dyeing.

Cellulose: This includes cotton linen rtamie rayon and all the plant based natural fibres.

Points to remember: Cellulose resists dye as the cellular walls of the fibre are inbuilt in nature to retain moisture inside and resist drowning. So getting colour into the cellular structure requires pre treatment of the fibres to make them conducive to accept the dye. All cellulose fabric or fibre you wish to dye must be pre treated with an alkiline wash. This is usually achieved in the small studio situation with a soda ash liquid preparation. This is described below.

Instructions: Heatfix CELLULOSE FABRICS (COTTON HEMP RAYON LINEN RAME CINEMAY)

Check that the dyes are Cellulose suitable – see on the label

Painting liquid dye onto fabric -- HEATFIX dye on cotton, rayon and cellulose fibres:

Step 1 Soak the cellulose fibre in a bath made by dissolving 35 g (3 heaped tablespoons) of soda ash and 2 tbsp of salt in 1 litre of water.

Step 2 . After soaking for approx. 20 minutes remove the cellulose fabric from the bath. Spin off excess moisture in the washing machine, but do not rinse. You can paint the cellulose wet or dry. (eg leave the fabric to dry and paint it later or paint it on wet immediately)

Step 3 Check that you have chosen your colours from the cellulose applicable colours listed above (C or PC colours) and proceed with painting in the same way as if you were painting on silk. Let the dye sit for overnight, on teh fabric, then heatfix and rinse. Heatfixation can be by any method, a good one in Australia is top place the item in a black plastic bag in the hot sun for a day. This does work.

Immersion (dyeing in a pot of water) dyeing cotton, rayon and cellulose fibres with liquid HEATFIXdyes

Step 4 Put your cellulose fibre into the pot and simmer for 30 minutes while stirring
