BEAUTIFUL SILKS Fabric - what is eco friendly?

x

Sustainable fabrics

Our Eco-friendly fabrics include all the silks on the list. Woven wool cottons linens and bamboos are secondary products and vary in their suisatinability. So many varying factors come into play. How far has a prduct travelled, was it made with paid labour. At Beautiful Silks Marion Hera-Gorr our managing partner takes time to investigate our producers. No child labour is our rule, no slave labour. The lines are blurred when you look at family tradition. As a rule of thumb, all silks are friendly to the environment. Cotton varies from local organic to toxic. We import cotton sheeting but it is not from sustainable sources. We buy local knitted cotton when available, and sources from this are not guaranteed. Bamboo sounds very good until you realise much of it has been through a chemical process similar to rayon, therefore is not suystainable. Soy looks promising until you realise that great destruction is happening in the Amazon - land is being cleared to grow the bean, the protein from th ebean is chemically extracted. This destroys habitat and is a disaster in the making. Linen has been grown for centuries and takes a lot of water to clean, water rhetting can work but depends on where it is done and how far it has had to travel to get it to you the customer.
