Rae says: I believe the binding was unearthed by Hedi Kyle, and it has been dated between the 14th and 16th centuries. Story is, this type of binding had been long lost and forgotten until Hedi came upon it and she figured out how it was done. It is thought that it was a special binding method of a particular binder so it was never widely known

Workshops planned for 2009

Phil Fogle visited Australia 2 years ago and led several workshops, indicating tips to textile artists on how to take their own digital pictures of their work. These workshops were very much appreciated by the participants, one managed to get good pictures of her black devore, in the one session. Phil is returning to Australia in 2009, we are looking for expressions of interest for one workshop to be held in Melbounre March 2009

Marion:

“Colour and design are interesting and I have observed how we all gravitate to different colours,” says Marion. “The two workshops that I am interested in holding over the next 2 years reflect that interest. I can pass on to you the knowledge of how to make shapes, that fit you and how to colour natural cloth that suits you.”

Marion is now taking bookings for dyeing workshops maximum of 12 people, and “cut and fit” workshops, maximum of four people. She is also able to offer "one-on-one" tuition in Warrnambool, including separate accommodation and all meals, for $800 one-day /one night or $1500 2 days/ 1 night inclusive of GST.

Dyeing workshop

Dyeing workshop covers the procolour dye system, dyeing fabrics, yarns, also print medium methods and silk crinkling. Each participant gets basic materials and a dye booklet, maximum 12 people, cost $140 plus accommodation.

Regular workshops cover the complete dyeing process using different types of dyes and many types of fabrics.

Specialty workshops can be designed to suit customer demand.

Students with any natural fibre or cloth should bring their own.
Time10-4pm -- all students must be available for the last hour to assist in cleaning up.

Upcoming Workshops!

Cut and fit workshops

Students learn how to adapt patterns to make them fit themselves, how to alter garments and reconstruct garments.

The garment workshops which range from 2 to 5 days cover:

Special workshops can be designed for small groups to suit individual interest (for example, maternity garments).

All workshops are held when four clients have booked to do this workshop. Usually, these are booked by groups of people who are established craftspeople and often who already know eachother. Generally these cut and fit workshops are held in our Fitzroy warehouse, but they can be by arrangement held in other centres by negotiation.

Marion’s detailed notes of the garment workshops, for those who can’t make it to her workshops, with a series of over 50 step-by-step photos will be on CD and available at the forums at $30/ posted $35.

If you can’t make it to the forums, email us to order. We don’t like taking credit card over the internet, so we’ll phone for the details… or post a cheque to Beautiful Silks, 101 Victoria St, Fitzroy 3065.

If you attend both the dyeing and “cut and fit” workshops, you will learn how to cut a garment to fit, dye or print the fabric, and prepare the garment for sewing.

Can’t make it to a scheduled workshop but want personalized tuition?

Individualized tuition is available at $600 per day including GST. For younger students, summer residential internships can be arranged covering the entire production cycle as a complement to a textile or fashion course from as little as $350 including meals for 5 days.
