Carolyn Sullivan : Stitch: New ways with Kantha March 5&6th 2011

Workshop description:
With leaves as a theme a number of techniques will be demonstrated including leaf printing, transfer of leaves, stamping based on floral decorative patterns in old, treasured embroidery books. Examples of workshop pieces:

A sampler will be started in class using traditional Indian Techniques. As well, another work will be started which can either be a contemporary narrative piece design by the student with the tutor's assitance or an embroidery based on traditional designs. Examples of workshop pieces:


Tutor comment:

Kanthas are heavily stitched domestic cloths made mostly by women and used in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. They were very symbolic by their nature and typically have close stitching. Running stitch is thje stitch most commonly used stitch although some decorative stiutches are used as well.

Notes for preparations and requirements:

You must be able to do a basic running stitch, be able to thread a needle and have some experience of handling fabrics for stitching to join this class.

 

 

Tutor Profile

Carolyn Sullivan is a very experienced craftswoman, artist and teacher. She has held numerous teaching appointments in Australia and overseas. Her excellent artistry is admired by many and she has exhibited both within Australia and internationally. Among her awards are various prizes at the Sydney Quilt show, and she also has gained a third in Meroogal Women's Art prize, Historic hgouses Trust, NSW.
