JULIAN ROBERTS SUBRACTION CUTTING MASTERCLASS TIMETABLE:

Morning: SUB-CUT DEMONSTRATION download pdf instructions here to see how to prepatre your fabrics

(3 hours duration, for up to 150 people + in lecture theatre or studio setting)

Beautiful Silks class limit 30 Student arrival 9.30 for settling and introductions.

10am – 10.30am Video showreel intro – Who I am/What I do

10.30am – 11.30am The Geometry of Creative Cutting Explored

11.30am – 11.45am Coffee Break

11.45 – 12.45pm Live Cutting Demonstration – A Subtraction Cut Dress

12.45 – 1pm Q&A

1pm – 2pm Lunch Break/ End

Afternoon: SUB-CUT WORKSHOP (3 hours duration, for up to 30 people+ in workshop/studio setting):

2pm – 4.30pm Everyone makes a Subtraction Cut garment

4.30pm – 5pm Critique of work/ dress-up/ photos & debriefing

Evening: Private View exhibition of work for guests

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS:

Students need: Each student will need TWO fabrics each 3meters long x 100cm wide (minimum) any type/weight/kind, with threads to match. These fabrics need to be prepared for the workshop in advance. Please download the instructions here

Access to sewing machines pattern paper (2meters min. each ) and space to cut out in (floors/tables)

Fabric scissors, paper scissors, pins, notebooks, rulers, tape measures, cameras, and any other dressmaking equipment they wish to use.

Profile: Julian Roberts

Julian Roberts is a fashion designer and film-maker, who has shown 13 collections at London Fashion Week under 5 label names: nothing nothing, JULIANAND, Julian and Sophie, Parc deS EXpositions, and Tunnel Technique. He has won the British Fashion Council's 'New Generation Award' 5 times. He also Creative Directed SuperSuper Magazines two group shows at London Fashion Week in 2007/8. Julian is currently Fashion Host of BBC Blast online. He is an accomplished scholar and teacher with an impressive history of classes, lectures and demonstrations given in the UK and throughout Europe and America. He was awarded a Professorship and set up the new fashion school at the University of Hertfordshire in the UK in 2004, and now lectures MA Mixed Media Textiles at the Royal College of Art in London, and at 8 other universities worldwide. Julian Roberts is the inventor of a garment pattern cutting method called 'Subtraction Cutting', which he demonstrates live in front of large audiences in America and the UK, teaching people of all ages and levels of expertise how to construct creative clothing. If you want to own a Julian Roberts garment, then you have to first learn how it is made. All Julian Roberts garments are limited editions made individually for each person, and include a pattern cutting masterclass. Garments can be bought, or exchanged for collaborative skills or opportunities.
