For Intermediate or Advanced Feltmakers & Textile Artists

‘ORIKIRI FELT’ The major technique which I will teach in this 2 day workshop has evolved from my childhood play,

which the Japanese call ‘ki-ri-ga-mi ’.

This technique - where fabrics or pre- felts or pre-nuno-felts are folded (o-ri) and then cut (ki-ri) - is my attempt to adopt this paper technique as a feltmaking method!

I will assist participants in creating your desired piece(s) according to your level of development. You will make a piece(s) using the cutouts - which can be either geometric or flower shapes - and their surrounding shapes which can be any shapes - as the surface design - or you may like to create a piece by joining the cutouts and their surrounding shapes. This piece(s) can be either 2D or 3D, and felt, nuno-felt or complex felt.

You can use either all or some of the techniques which I will show to the class or combine the technique(s) with your normal practice.

Items You may make using this technique effectively could include; garments, head-wear, ornamental accessories, blankets, throws, hangings, lampshades, book covers, vessels and more.

You will learn the following techniques and more in the class;

a) play with positive (cutouts) and negative (their surrounding) shapes.

b) project the parts of some cutouts out from the surface in several ways for creating a more interesting and more tactile surface.

c) create a few various point cutouts refer to images for examples of my work!....in an easy way.

d) make cutout edges of a fabric or pre-felt or pre-nuno-felt.

e) layer or weave some cutouts.

f) create a piece(s) with various bases. As an example, using two very sheer fabrics and place the cutouts on both sides and between the fabrics see images here, and create a piece which is both felt and nuno-felt by using a piece of sheer or easy-to-felt fabric refer these images:

g) use a large pre-felt (the sections were pre-nuno-felt) as the base of the piece.
