About Beautiful Silks
Marion Gorr started trading textiles in the 1980’s. Her family tradition in textiles goes back a while, her mother was a professional dressmaker for many years and taught garment upcycling way back in the 70’s in Hastings New Zealand at night school – when many beautiful handwoven tweeds were appearing as disgarded garments in op shops.
Growing up with such a background and spending most of her early years with grandmother Annie Wright who did fine needlework, crochet, lacemaking and dressmaking, instilled a love of the cloth and thread that is inculcated as an important part of life. The collections are now shared with you. Every time Marion travels to see what’s being produced to pick the very best products of pure and natural fibre based textiles, you get to share the wonder of this chain of events. The fibre is produced, sold to the fibre cleaners, cleaned, sent to the spinning mill, then woven or knitted into cloth that feels just amazing on your skin.
We now grow botanical dyes and supply Australasia’s widest selection of specialty natural products from our warehouse situated in Allansford near Warrnambool in Victoria Australia.
Many of our products are organic, silk is grown in pesticide free areas (due to the sensitivity of the silkworm to pesticides). When you buy from us, you are purchasing product that has been seen in the factiory, we have often met the people who own and work in the factories and small workshops we buy from.
We are situated 10 km East of Warrnambool, close to the Great Ocean Road.
Workshops: Sadly, covid 19 put an end to our gatherings, however good online workshops are linked on our workshop page, and sometimes we offer those where people gather.
